Supporting Your Personnel

What is Employee Development?

Employee development is one of the most important functions of HR management and literally means what it implies.

'Employee development is the function to develop the abilities of an individual and of the organisation as a whole'.

There is a known direct correlation between employee development and employee performance.

Consequently, when employees are developed properly, they are, in general, more satisfied with the job and more committed to the business, and their performance in the company increases, culminating in a more effective and efficient organisation.

Improving Employee Development

As with every aspect of HR Management there is never just one way of dealing with employee development. In general, a variety of actions should take place in order to fully enhance the potential of each employee. We can help this development with HR advice and expertise.

Many people are still under the impression that employee development is about 'training'. However, this is quite inaccurate and although standard training may help, there are a multitude of other ways in which employees can develop.

Your business should:

  • Encourage employees to participate in conferences and seminars in line with their position and skill sets.

  • Take employees out for client visits, plant visits and site visits to help them gain a better understanding of their job responsibilities in the grand scheme of things.
  • Encourage employees to learn a lot of new things while on the job itself. This includes monitoring them and giving good constructive feedback.
  • Ensure HR provide manuals, guidelines, checklists and organisational policies for the employee to understand their role in the company.
  • Ensure managers provide additional responsibilities to their employees.
  • Promote job rotation as a way to help employees develop and enhance their skills.
  • Allow employees to shadow colleagues in order for them to learn new skills and gain new knowledge.
